Zuhri reported,

We were with Umar bin Abdul-Aziz when he once delayed the afternoon prayer. Urwa bin Zubayr said to him, "Bashir bin Ubayy Masud al-Ansari told me that Mughira bin Shuba once delayed the prayer, meaning the afternoon prayer, and Abu Masud said to him, 'By Allah, Mughira, you know full well that Jibreel descended and prayed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with him and the people prayed along with him. Then he descended again and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and the people prayed with him,' until he counted five prayers."Umar said to him, "Consider carefully what you are saying, Urwa. Is it really the case that Jibreel established the times of prayer?"Urwa replied, "That is exactly what Bashir bin Ubayy Masud told me."Umar continued to learn the time of each prayer by its sign until he departed this world.

عن الزهري قال

كنا مع عمر بن عبد العزيز فأخر صلاة العصر مرة فقال له عروة بن الزبير حدثني بشير بن أبي مسعود الأنصاري أن المغيرة بن شعبة أخر الصلاة مرة يعني العصر فقال له أبو مسعود أما والله يا مغيرة لقد علمت أن جبريل عليه السلام نزل فصلى وصلى رسول الله ﷺ وصلى الناس معه ثم نزل فصلى رسول الله ﷺ وصلى الناس معه حتى عد خمس صلوات فقال له عمر انظر ما تقول يا عروة أوإن جبريل هو سن الصلاة قال عروة كذلك حدثني بشير بن أبي مسعود فما زال عمر يتعلم وقت الصلاة بعلامة حتى فارق الدنيا
