I asked Rabia, and he said, "Malik narrated it to me from Zayd bin Khalid, that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about a stray camel. He became angry, his cheeks reddened, and he said, 'What business do you have with it? It has its hooves and its water supply, it can reach water and eat from trees until its owner finds it.'He was asked about a stray sheep, and he said, 'Take it, for it is either for you, for your brother, or for the wolf.'He was asked about a lost item, and he said, 'Note its container and its tie, then announce it for a year. If someone identifies it, give it to him, otherwise mix it with your own property.'"
حدثنا سفيان عن يحيى بن سعيد عن يزيد مولى المنبعث قال يحيى أخبرني ربيعة أنه قال
فسألت ربيعة فقال أخبرنيه عن زيد بن خالد سئل النبي ﷺ عن ضالة الإبل فغضب واحمرت وجنتاه وقال ما لك ولها معها الحذاء والسقاء ترد الماء وتأكل الشجر حتى تجيء ربها وسئل عن ضالة الغنم فقال خذها فإنما هي لك أو لأخيك أو للذئب وسئل عن اللقطة فقال اعرف عفاصها ووكاءها ثم عرفها سنة فإن اعترفت وإلا فاخلطها بمالك
Its isnad is sahih. Yazid, the freedman of Munbaith, is indeed his name, and he is among the trustworthy Successors, and likewise Rabia Filastini, both of whom have been mentioned before. The hadith has already appeared at 16983.
