We visited Abu Ubayda to check on him during his illness, and he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever spends a generous contribution in the cause of Allah, it is rewarded seven hundredfold. Whoever spends on himself, on his family, visits a sick person, or removes something harmful from the road, that is a good deed rewarded tenfold. Fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it apart. And whoever is tested by Allah with an affliction in his body, it serves as an expiation for him.'"
Its chain of transmission is, in my view, incomplete. Hisham is Ibn Hassan Azdi. Wasil is the freedman of Abu Uyayna, whose biography was given earlier at 1690. He actually transmits this hadith from Bashar bin Abu Sayf, as noted before, and [Walid bin Abdul-Rahman] has dropped out of that chain while [Bashar bin Abu Sayf] has dropped out of this one. We have already clarified there that Wasil transmits the hadith from Bashar, from Walid bin Abdul-Rahman, from Iyad bin Ghatif, and that Bashar is transmitted from by both Jareer bin Hazim and Wasil. The hadith will come again after this, correctly, connected through the route of Jareer bin Hazim."Or removed harm" appears here in manuscript K in place of "or repelled harm."
