We were with Muawiya as he reclined on his couch with his eyes closed, and we began discussing migration. Some of us were saying it had come to an end, while others were saying it had not. Muawiya stirred and asked, "What were you discussing?"We told him, and he was someone who rarely contradicted the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "We discussed this matter in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'Migration will not cease until repentance ceases, and repentance will not cease until the sun rises from its place of setting.'"
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أخبرنا حريز بن عثمان قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن أبي عوف الجرشي
كنا عند معاوية وهو على سريره وقد غمض عينيه فتذاكرنا الهجرة والقائل منا يقول انقطعت والقائل منا يقول لم تنقطع فاستنبه معاوية فقال ما كنتم فيه فأخبرناه وكان قليل الرد على النبي ﷺ فقال تذاكرنا عند رسول الله ﷺ فقال لا تنقطع الهجرة حتى تنقطع التوبة ولا تنقطع التوبة حتى تطلع الشمس من مغربها
