Jubayr bin Mutim reported,

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed the share allotted to close relatives from Khaybar between Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, Uthman bin Affan and I came to him.I said, "Messenger of Allah, these are Banu Hashim, whose merit cannot be denied because of your standing among them, by which Allah has honored them. But what about our brothers of Banu Muttalib? You have given to them and left us out, even though we and they stand in the same relation to you."He replied, "They never abandoned me in the days of ignorance or in Islam. Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib are one and the same."Then he interlaced his fingers.

قال حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أنا محمد بن إسحاق عن الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب

عن جبير بن مطعم قال

لما قسم رسول الله ﷺ سهم القربى من خيبر بين بني هاشم وبني المطلب جئت أنا وعثمان بن عفان فقلت يا رسول الله هؤلاء بنو هاشم لا ينكر فضلهم لمكانك الذي وصفك الله عز وجل به منهم أرأيت إخواننا من بني المطلب أعطيتهم وتركتنا وإنما نحن وهم منك بمنزلة واحدة قال إنهم لم يفارقوني في جاهلية ولا إسلام وإنما هم بنو هاشم وبنو المطلب شيء واحد قال ثم شبك بين أصابعه
