Suhayb came to the Prophet ﷺ while there were dates and bread before him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Come close and eat."Suhayb began eating from the dates, so the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "You have an inflammation in your eye."Suhayb replied, "Messenger of Allah, I am only eating from the other side."The Prophet ﷺ smiled.
قال حدثنا أبو النضر قال حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارك
إن صهيبا قدم على النبي ﷺ وبين يديه تمر وخبز فقال ادن فكل قال فأخذ يأكل من التمر فقال له النبي ﷺ إن بعينك رمدا فقال يا رسول الله إنما آكل من الناحية الأخرى قال فتبسم النبي ﷺ
Its isnad is hasan. Abdul-Hameed bin Sayfi bin Suhayb, and the correct form is Abdul-Hameed bin Ziyad bin Sayfi bin Suhayb, was deemed reliable by Ibn Hibban, while Abu Hatim said, "A shaykh," and Ibn Hajar softened his standing in Taqrib. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, 2/1139, no. 3443, in the Book of Medicine, on dietary restraint.
