During the time of the Harra, someone came to him and said, "Here is Ibn Hanzala," and Affan once said, "There is Ibn Hanzala taking the people's pledge."He asked, "On what is he taking their pledge?"The man replied, "On death."He said, "I will not give such a pledge to anyone after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
قال حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا وهيب قال حدثنا عمرو بن يحيى عن عباد بن تميم
لما كان زمن الحرة أتاه آت فقال هذا ابن حنظلة وقال عفان مرة هذاك ابن حنظلة يبايع الناس قال على أي شيء يبايعهم قال على الموت قال لا أبايع على هذا أحدا بعد رسول الله ﷺ
