Hasan Basri reported,

Uthman bin Abu As passed by Kulab bin Umaya, who was sitting in the tax collector's office in Basra.Uthman asked, "What has made you sit here?"He replied, "This man, meaning Ziyad, has employed me in this position."Uthman said to him, "Shall I tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He said, "Yes, please do."Uthman said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Dawud, the Prophet of Allah , had an hour of the night in which he would wake his family, saying, 'Family of Dawud, rise and pray, for this is an hour in which Allah answers supplications, except those of a sorcerer or a tax collector.'"So Kulab bin Umaya boarded his boat, went to Ziyad, and asked to be relieved of the position, and he was relieved.

عن الحسن قال

مر عثمان بن أبي العاص على كلاب بن أمية وهو جالس على مجلس العاشر بالبصرة فقال ما يجلسك هاهنا قال استعملني هذا على هذا المكان يعني زيادا فقال له عثمان ألا أحدثك حديثا سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ قال بلى فقال عثمان سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول كان لداود نبي الله عليه السلام من الليل ساعة يوقظ فيها أهله فيقول يا آل داود قوموا فصلوا فإن هذه ساعة يستجيب الله فيها الدعاء إلا لساحر أو عشار فركب كلاب بن أمية سفينته فأتى زيادا فاستعفاه فأعفاه
