We used to sell slaves in the marketplace, and we called ourselves brokers. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us a better name than the one we had given ourselves. He said, "Company of merchants, this trade of yours involves idle talk and oaths, so mix it with charity."
قال حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي عن سفيان عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت عن أبي وائل
كنا نبيع الرقيق في السوق وكنا نسمى السماسرة فسمانا رسول الله ﷺ بأحسن مما سمينا به أنفسنا فقال يا معشر التجار إن هذا البيع يحضره اللغو والأيمان فشوبوه بالصدقة
