We used to be called brokers during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came to us at al-Baqi and said, "Merchants!" He gave us a better name than the one we had used. Then he said, "Buying and selling is attended by oaths and lying, so mix your transactions with charity."
قال حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة عن جامع بن أبي راشد وعاصم عن أبي وائل
كنا نسمى السماسرة على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فأتانا بالبقيع فقال يا معشر التجار فسمانا باسم أحسن من اسمنا إن البيع يحضره الحلف والكذب فشوبوه بالصدقة
Its isnad is sahih. Jami bin Abu Rashid is trustworthy, and scholars have praised his hadith. Asim is Ibn Abu Najud, the reciter, and Abu Waail is Shaqiq bin Salama.This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 3/242, no. 3326, in the chapter on trade, on trade mixed with oaths. And by Tirmidhi, 3/505, no. 1208, in the chapter on trade, on what has been said about trade, where he said it is hasan sahih. And by Nasai, 7/14, no. 3797, and by Ibn Majah, 2/725, no. 2145. Hakim graded it sahih, 2/6, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
