Abdullah bin Awn reported,

He was a governor for Umar bin Abdul-Aziz over Ramlah. He witnessed Abdul-Malik bin Marwan say to Bashir bin Aqraba al-Juhani on the day Amr bin Saeed bin As was killed, "Abu al-Yaman, I am in need of your speech today, so stand up and speak."He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever stands to deliver a speech seeking nothing by it but showing off and reputation, Allah will place him on the Day of Resurrection in the standing of showing off and reputation.'"

وكان عاملا لعمر بن عبد العزيز على الرملة أنه شهد عبد الملك بن مروان قال لبشير بن عقربة الجهني يوم قتل عمرو بن سعيد بن العاص يا أبا اليمان إني قد احتجت اليوم إلى كلامك فقم فتكلم قال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من قام يخطب لا يلتمس بها إلا رياء وسمعة أوقفه الله عز وجل يوم القيامة موقف رياء وسمعة
