The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed him as commander over a military expedition, and he set out with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you capture so-and-so, burn him with fire."When I turned to leave, he called me back and said, "If you capture him, kill him, for none punishes with fire except the Lord of fire."
حدثنا سعيد بن منصور حدثنا المغيرة بن عبد الرحمن عن أبي الزناد قال حدثني
أن رسول الله ﷺ أمره على سرية فخرجت فيها فقال إن أخذتم فلانا فأحرقوه بالنار فلما وليت ناداني فقال إن أخذتموه فاقتلوه فإنه لا يعذب بالنار إلا رب النار
Its isnad is sahih, and Muhammad bin Hamza bin Amr Aslami was deemed trustworthy by many, and his hadith appears in Muslim. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud with its wording, 3/54, number 2673, in the chapter on jihad, on the dislike of burning the enemy with fire, and Bukhari narrated it from Abu Hurairah, 6/149, number 3016 in Fath al-Bari, mentioning that the one sought to be burned was actually two men, not one. Ibn Hajar mentioned that the first was Habbar bin Aswad bin Muttalib, and the second was Khalid bin Abd Qays Fihri. It is also found in Tirmidhi, 4/137, number 1571, where he said, hasan sahih.
