I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people at Mina from atop a mule, wearing a red cloak, with a man from the people of Badr in front of him relaying his words. I came forward until I slipped my hand between his foot and the strap of his sandal, and I marveled at how cool it felt.
حدثنا أبو معاوية قال حدثنا
رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يخطب الناس بمنى على بغلة وعليه برد أحمر قال ورجل من أهل بدر بين يديه يعبر عنه قال فجئت حتى أدخلت يدي بين قدمه وشراكه قال فجعلت أعجب من بردها
Its isnad is sahih. Hilal bin Amir Muzani is trustworthy, the imams have affirmed his reliability and praised him, and his hadith appears in the Sunan. Abu Dawud narrated the hadith in 4/54, no. 4072, in the chapter on clothing, on the permissibility of that, meaning of wearing red. We have already noted that the Arabs use the term red to describe the color brown or the color of soil, whereas deep red, which is the color of blood whether light or dark, is what is disliked or forbidden.
