We used to engage in sharecropping and saw no harm in it, until Rafi bin Khadij claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had forbidden it, so we abandoned the practice.
حدثنا سفيان قال سمعت عمرا سمع
كنا نخابر ولا نرى بذلك بأسا حتى زعم رافع بن خديج أن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عنه فتركناه
Its chain of transmission is sahih, its men are leading authorities. Sufyan is Ibn Uyayna, and Amr is Ibn Dinar the Makkan. This hadith has already come by way of Jabir, and we have already said that the majority of scholars permitted mukhabara, which is leasing land in exchange for a share of its produce, citing as evidence the Prophet's ﷺ practice in Khaybar. They interpreted the prohibition mentioned here as pertaining to what is merely undesirable, and considered it a matter of a Muslim helping his fellow Muslim.
