A group of men came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him for something, so he gave to them all except for one man.Saad said, "Messenger of Allah, you gave to them but left out so-and-so. By Allah, I truly consider him a believer."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Or a Muslim?"Saad repeated his statement three times, saying "a believer," and each time the Prophet ﷺ responded, "Or a Muslim?"On the third time, the Prophet ﷺ said, "By Allah, I may give to a man while another whom I have not given is more beloved to me, out of fear that Allah may cast the first one on his face into the Fire."
حدثنا يزيد أنبأنا ابن أبي ذئب عن الزهري
عن النبي ﷺ أنه أتاه رهط فسألوه فأعطاهم إلا رجلا منهم قال سعد فقلت يا رسول الله أعطيتهم وتركت فلانا فوالله إني لأراه مؤمنا فقال النبي ﷺ أو مسلما فرد عليه سعد ذلك ثلاثا مؤمنا ورد عليه النبي ﷺ أو مسلما فقال النبي ﷺ في الثالثة والله إني لأعطي الرجل العطاء لغيره أحب إلي منه خوفا أن يكبه الله على وجهه في النار
