Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik, who was the son who guided Kaab when he became blind, said, "I heard Kaab bin Malik narrate his story of when he stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Battle of Tabuk."Kaab bin Malik said, "I never stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in any expedition he undertook except for the Battle of Tabuk, though I had also stayed behind during the Battle of Badr. But no one was reproached for staying behind from Badr, since the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out only intending to intercept the caravan of Quraysh, and Allah brought him and his enemy together unexpectedly. I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night of Aqaba when we pledged ourselves to Islam, and I would not exchange that occasion for being present at Badr, even though Badr is more frequently mentioned among people and more renowned than it.The story of how I stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Battle of Tabuk is this. I had never been stronger or better off than I was at the time I stayed behind from him on that expedition. By Allah, I had never possessed two riding camels at once before, but I had two for that expedition.Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended to undertake an expedition, he would conceal it by hinting at another destination, until that expedition came. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for it in severe heat, facing a long journey, a desert to cross, and a numerous enemy. So he made the matter clear to the Muslims, that they might prepare adequately for their enemy, and informed them of the direction he intended to take. The Muslims with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were many, and no register could hold their names."Kaab continued, "Few were the men who wished to absent themselves who did not suppose that this would remain hidden, so long as no revelation came from Allah about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ undertook that expedition when the fruits had ripened and the shade was pleasant, and I was inclined toward those things. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the believers with him made their preparations, and I would set out in the morning to prepare with them, then return without having accomplished anything, saying to myself, 'I am able to do it whenever I wish.' I kept doing this until people grew serious and the day came when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the morning with the Muslims, while I had not finished any of my preparations. I told myself, 'I will prepare a day or two later, then catch up with them.' I went out in the morning after they had departed to make my preparations, but returned without having done anything. Then I went out again the next morning, and again returned without having done anything. This kept dragging on until they had advanced quickly and the expedition slipped past me. I considered setting out to overtake them, and would that I had done so, but it was not decreed for me.After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had departed, whenever I went out among the people, it grieved me that I saw only men suspected of hypocrisy or men whom Allah had excused. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not mention me until he reached Tabuk. While he was sitting among the people at Tabuk, he asked, 'What has Kaab bin Malik done?'A man from Banu Salama said, 'Messenger of Allah, his fine cloaks and his self-admiration have detained him.'Muaz bin Jabal said to him, 'What an evil thing you have said. By Allah, Messenger of Allah, we know nothing about him except good.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent."Kaab bin Malik continued, "When I learned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on his way back from Tabuk, my distress overwhelmed me. I began thinking up lies, saying to myself, 'How shall I escape his anger tomorrow?' I sought help in this from every wise person in my family. But when it was said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to arrive, all falsehood vanished from me, and I knew I would never escape from him by anything but the truth. So I resolved to be truthful with him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in the morning. Whenever he returned from a journey, he would begin with the mosque and pray two units of prayer there, then sit for the people. When he had done so, those who had stayed behind came to him and began making excuses and swearing oaths to him. They were over eighty men. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted their outward statements, asked forgiveness for them, and entrusted their inner intentions to Allah
, until I came. When I greeted him, he smiled the smile of an angry man, then said to me, 'Come here.' I came walking until I sat before him. He said to me, 'What kept you behind? Had you not purchased your mount?'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, by Allah, if I were sitting before anyone other than you among the people of this world, I would think I could escape his anger with an excuse, for I have been given the gift of argument. But by Allah, I know that if I tell you a false story today that pleases you, Allah will soon make you angry with me. And if I tell you the truth today and you become angry with me over it, I still hope for a good outcome from Allah
. By Allah, I had no excuse. By Allah, I was never freer or better off than when I stayed behind from you.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'As for this one, he has spoken the truth. So get up until Allah decides about you.'I got up, and some men from Banu Salama hurried after me. They said to me, 'By Allah, we never knew you to have committed any sin before this. Yet you were unable to offer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the same kind of excuse the others who stayed behind offered. The forgiveness sought for you by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would have sufficed for your sin.'By Allah, they kept reproaching me until I wanted to go back and contradict myself. Then I asked them, 'Has anyone else faced what I am facing?'They said, 'Yes, two men have said what you said and were given the same response you were given.'I asked, 'Who are they?'They said, 'Murara bin Rabi al-Amiri and Hilal bin Umaya al-Waqifi.'They mentioned to me two righteous men who had been at Badr, in whom I had a model. So I went my way when they named them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the Muslims from speaking to the three of us out of all those who had stayed behind. So the people avoided us and changed toward us, until the earth itself seemed strange to me, no longer the earth I had known. We continued like this for fifty nights. As for my two companions, they submitted and sat in their houses weeping. But I was the youngest and most resilient of them. I would attend the prayer with the Muslims, walk through the markets, and no one would speak to me. I would come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he sat among his companions after the prayer and greet him, asking myself, 'Did his lips move to return the greeting or not?' Then I would pray near him, stealing glances at him. When I turned to my prayer, he would look at me, but when I looked toward him, he would turn away. When this shunning by the Muslims had gone on long enough, I went and climbed over the wall of Abu Qatada's garden. He was my cousin and the dearest of people to me. I greeted him, but by Allah, he did not return my greeting. I said to him, 'Abu Qatada, I implore you by Allah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger?'He remained silent. I repeated my appeal, and he remained silent. I appealed again, and he said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'My eyes overflowed with tears, and I turned away and climbed back over the wall. While I was walking through the market of Madinah, a Nabataean from among the Nabataeans of Sham who had come to sell food in Madinah was saying, 'Who will direct me to Kaab bin Malik?' People began pointing me out to him until he came and handed me a letter from the king of Ghassan. I could read, and it said, 'To proceed. We have heard that your companion has treated you harshly. Allah has not placed you in a house of humiliation or neglect. Come and join us, and we will console you.'When I read it, I said, 'This too is part of the trial.' I took it to the oven and burned it in the fire. When forty of the fifty nights had passed, a messenger from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ orders you to keep apart from your wife.'I asked, 'Shall I divorce her, or what shall I do?'He said, 'Just keep apart from her and do not approach her.'He sent the same message to my two companions. So I said to my wife, 'Go to your family and stay with them until Allah decides this matter.'The wife of Hilal bin Umaya came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him, 'Messenger of Allah, Hilal is a helpless old man with no servant. Would you object to my serving him?'He said, 'No, but he must not approach you.'She said, 'By Allah, he has no inclination toward anything. By Allah, he has done nothing but weep from the day this happened to him until this very day.'Some of my family said to me, 'Why don't you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission concerning your wife? He has given the wife of Hilal bin Umaya permission to serve him.'I said, 'By Allah, I will not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission concerning her, and I do not know what he might say if I asked him, since I am a young man.'We continued like this for ten more nights, completing fifty nights since we had been forbidden to be spoken to.Then I prayed the dawn prayer on the morning of the fiftieth night on the roof of one of our houses. While I was sitting in the state Allah
described, my soul confined and the earth narrowed for me despite its vastness, I heard a caller who had climbed Mount Sala calling at the top of his voice, 'Kaab bin Malik, rejoice!'I fell prostrate, knowing that relief had come. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had announced Allah's
acceptance of our repentance after praying the dawn prayer, and people had gone out to bring us the good news. Some had gone to my two companions to give them the good news, and a man galloped a horse toward me, while a runner from Aslam climbed the mountain. The voice was faster than the horse. When the man whose voice I had heard came to me with the good news, I took off my two garments and clothed him in them as a reward for his news. By Allah, I owned no other garments that day, so I borrowed two garments and put them on.I set out toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. People met me in groups, congratulating me on the acceptance of my repentance, saying, 'Congratulations on Allah's acceptance of your repentance.' Until I entered the mosque, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting surrounded by people. Talha bin Ubaydullah got up and hurried to me, shook my hand, and congratulated me. By Allah, no man among the Muhajirin rose to me except him."Kaab never forgot that of Talha.Kaab said, "When I greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his face was glowing with joy. He said, 'Receive good news of the best day you have had since your mother bore you.'I said, 'Is it from you, Messenger of Allah, or from Allah?'He said, 'No, it is from Allah.'When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased, his face would shine until it was as if it were a piece of the moon, and we would recognize his joy by it.When I sat before him, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, as part of my repentance, I shall give up all my wealth as charity to Allah and His Messenger.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Keep some of your wealth, that is better for you.'I said, 'I will keep my share at Khaybar.' Then I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Allah has saved me through truthfulness, and as part of my repentance I shall not speak anything but the truth as long as I live.'By Allah, I do not know any Muslim whom Allah has tested with truthfulness in speech better than He tested me from the time I said that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, I have not deliberately lied since the day I said that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until this day of mine, and I hope that Allah will preserve me in what remains.Allah
revealed, "Allah has already turned in mercy to the Prophet and the Muhajirin and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had nearly deviated. Then He turned to them. Indeed, He is to them Kind and Merciful. And to the three who were left behind, until the earth, vast as it is, became narrow for them, and their souls became straitened for them, and they realized that there was no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so that they might repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. You who have believed, fear Allah and be with the truthful" [Tawba 9:117–119]."Kaab said, "By Allah, Allah
never bestowed any favor upon me, after guiding me to Islam, greater in my own estimation than my truthfulness with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day, that I did not lie to him and so perish as those who lied perished. For Allah
said about those who lied to him when they lied the worst that has been said of anyone. Allah said, "They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you might leave them alone. So leave them alone. Indeed, they are defilement, and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they used to earn. They swear to you so that you might be pleased with them. But if you should be pleased with them, indeed, Allah is not pleased with a defiantly disobedient people" [Tawba 9:95–96].We three had been set apart from the affair of those whose excuses the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted when they swore to him, so he took their pledge and asked forgiveness for them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ postponed our case until Allah decided. About this Allah said, "And to the three who were left behind" [Tawba 9:118]. His leaving us behind and postponing our affair, which was mentioned, was not about our staying behind from the expedition. Rather, it was about him deferring us compared to those who swore oaths to him and made excuses, which he accepted from them."
