Kaab bin Malik reported,

I had never been better prepared in terms of mounts and provisions for any expedition than I was for that one. Kaab said, When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, I told myself, "I will get ready tomorrow and then catch up with him." So I began my preparations, but evening came and I had not finished. I said, "I will continue preparing tomorrow, the people are still close, and then I will join them." Evening came again and I had not finished. On the third day I started preparing, and again evening came without my having finished. I said, "How far away they must be now, the people have been traveling for three days." So I stayed behind.When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, people began coming to him with their excuses. I came forward and stood before him and said, "I had never been better prepared in terms of mounts and provisions for any expedition than I was for this one." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from me and ordered the people not to speak to us, and our wives were ordered to keep away from us.One day I climbed over a wall and there I found Jabir bin Abdullah. I said, "Jabir, I ask you by Allah, do you know of any day on which I was disloyal to Allah and His Messenger?"He remained silent and would not speak to me.Then one day, as I was sitting, I heard a man on the mountain pass calling out, "Kaab! Kaab!" until he drew close to me and said, "Glad tidings to Kaab!"

حدثنا إسماعيل قال أخبرنا ابن عون عن عمر بن كثير بن أفلح قال قال

كعب بن مالك

ما كنت في غزاة أيسر للظهر والنفقة مني في تلك الغزاة قال لما خرج رسول الله ﷺ قلت أتجهز غدا ثم ألحقه فأخذت في جهازي فأمسيت ولم أفرغ فقلت آخذ في جهازي غدا والناس قريب بعد ثم ألحقهم فأمسيت ولم أفرغ فلما كان اليوم الثالث أخذت في جهازي فأمسيت فلم أفرغ فقلت أيهات سار الناس ثلاثا فأقمت فلما قدم رسول الله ﷺ جعل الناس يعتذرون إليه فجئت حتى قمت بين يديه فقلت ما كنت في غزاة أيسر للظهر والنفقة مني في هذه الغزاة فأعرض عني رسول الله ﷺ وأمر الناس أن لا يكلمونا وأمرت نساؤنا أن يتحولن عنا قال فتسورت حائطا ذات يوم فإذا أنا بجابر بن عبد الله فقلت أي جابر نشدتك بالله هل علمتني غششت الله ورسوله يوما قط قال فسكت عني فجعل لا يكلمني قال فبينا أنا ذات يوم إذ سمعت رجلا على الثنية يقول كعبا كعبا حتى دنا مني فقال بشروا كعبا
