When Yazid bin Muawiya died, Dahhak bin Qays wrote to Qays bin al-Haytham,"Peace be upon you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Before the Hour there will be tribulations like patches of dark night, tribulations like billows of smoke, in which a man's heart dies just as his body dies. A man will wake up a believer and go to bed an unbeliever, and go to bed a believer and wake up an unbeliever. People will sell their portion in the Hereafter and their religion for some worldly gain.'Yazid bin Muawiya has died, and you are our brothers and our kin, so do not act before we do until we have chosen for ourselves."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا حماد بن سلمة قال أخبرنا علي بن زيد
أن الضحاك بن قيس كتب إلى قيس بن الهيثم حين مات يزيد بن معاوية سلام عليك أما بعد فإني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إن بين يدي الساعة فتنا كقطع الليل المظلم فتنا كقطع الدخان يموت فيها قلب الرجل كما يموت بدنه يصبح الرجل مؤمنا ويمسي كافرا ويمسي مؤمنا ويصبح كافرا يبيع أقوام خلاقهم ودينهم بعرض من الدنيا وإن يزيد بن معاوية قد مات وأنتم إخواننا وأشقاؤنا فلا تسبقونا حتى نختار لأنفسنا
Its isnad is hasan because of Ali bin Zayd, while the rest are leading authorities. The hadith has already appeared at 15618, and it is found in Muslim 1/110, no. 118, as well as in the Sahih collections.
