Shurayh Hadrami was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "That is a man who does not use the Quran as a pillow."
حدثنا يحيى بن آدم قال حدثنا ابن مبارك عن يونس عن الزهري
أن شريحا الحضرمي قال ذكر عند النبي ﷺ فقال ذاك رجل لا يتوسد القرآن
Its isnad is sahih, and its narrators are well-known. It is found in Nasai 3/256, number 1783, in the chapter on Qiyam al-Layl, regarding the time of the two rakats of Fajr, and in Tabarani's Al-Kabir 7/148, number 6654.As for the meaning of his statement, "That is a man who does not use the Quran as a pillow," the commentators on the Sunan said it could carry either praise or blame. The aspect of blame is that he does not take the Quran lightly, while the aspect of praise is that he does not neglect the Quran but rather recites it at night and takes it as though it were a pillow.I say, it cannot possibly carry blame, rather it is praise, because Shurayh was among the excellent companions, as Ibn Abdul-Barr said in Istiab.
