Sahl bin Abu Hathma came to our gathering and reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you estimate the produce, take what is due and leave a portion. Leave a third. If you do not leave a third, then leave a quarter."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا شعبة قال أخبرني خبيب بن عبد الرحمن الأنصاري قال سمعت
جاء سهل بن أبي حثمة إلى مجلسنا فحدث أن رسول الله ﷺ قال إذا خرصتم فجدوا ودعوا دعوا الثلث فإن لم تجدوا وتدعوا فدعوا الربع
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Khubayb bin Abdul-Rahman Ansari is considered reliable by them, and his hadith is found in the collections of all the major compilers. Abdul-Rahman bin Masud bin Niyar Ansari Madani, they considered him reliable and accepted his hadith.This hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 2/110, number 1605, in the chapter on zakat, on estimating crop yields, and by Tirmidhi similarly, 3/26, number 963, who said, Malik, Shafii, and Ahmad acted upon it. It was also narrated by Nasai, 5/42, number 2491, and Darimi, 2/351, number 2619.
