The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded his companions to set out on a military expedition. One man stayed behind and said to his family, "I will delay so that I may pray Dhuhr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then greet him and bid him farewell, that he may make a supplication for me which will intercede for me on the Day of Resurrection."When the Prophet ﷺ had finished praying, the man came forward to greet him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Do you know by how much your companions have outstripped you?"He replied, "Yes, they outstripped me by setting out in the morning."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, they have outstripped you in merit by a distance greater than that between the two easts and the two wests."
حدثنا حسن حدثنا ابن لهيعة حدثنا زبان حدثنا
عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه أمر أصحابه بالغزو وأن رجلا تخلف وقال لأهله أتخلف حتى أصلي مع رسول الله ﷺ الظهر ثم أسلم عليه وأودعه فيدعو لي بدعوة تكون شافعة يوم القيامة فلما صلى النبي ﷺ أقبل الرجل مسلما عليه فقال له رسول الله ﷺ أتدري بكم سبقك أصحابك قال نعم سبقوني بغدوتهم فقال رسول الله ﷺ والذي نفسي بيده لقد سبقوك بأبعد ما بين المشرقين والمغربين في الفضيلة
