We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a group of young men close in age, and we stayed with him for twenty nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was merciful and gentle, and he sensed that we had grown homesick for our families. He asked us about those we had left behind, and we told him.He then said, "Return to your families and stay among them. Teach them and instruct them. When the time for prayer arrives, let one of you give the call to prayer, and let the eldest among you lead the prayer."
حدثنا إسماعيل بن إبراهيم حدثنا أيوب عن أبي قلابة
أتينا رسول الله ﷺ ونحن شببة متقاربون فأقمنا معه عشرين ليلة قال وكان رسول الله ﷺ رحيما رفيقا فظن أنا قد اشتقنا أهلنا فسألنا عمن تركنا في أهلنا فأخبرناه فقال ارجعوا إلى أهليكم فأقيموا فيهم وعلموهم ومروهم إذا حضرت الصلاة فليؤذن لكم أحدكم ثم ليؤمكم أكبركم
Its isnad is sahih. Ismail bin Ibrahim is Ibn Ulaya, Ayub is al-Sakhtiyani, and Abu Qilaba is Abdullah bin Zayd al-Jarmi, and they are all trustworthy narrators.The hadith was narrated by Bukhari, 9/107, in the Book of Rulings, the chapter on what has been said about accepting the report of a single narrator, and by Muslim, 1/465, no. 674, in the Book of Mosques, the chapter on who is most entitled to lead the prayer, and by Abu Dawud, 1/161, no. 589, in the Book of Prayer, with similar wording, and by Nasai, 2/9, no. 635, in the Book of the Adhan, the chapter on a man being satisfied with someone else's adhan while residing in town, and by Darimi, 1/318, no. 1253.His statement, "shayba," is the plural of "shaib" (one whose hair has turned gray).
