We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the people there were greatly delighted by our arrival. When we reached the gathering, they made room for us and we sat down. The Prophet ﷺ welcomed us and prayed for us, then looked at us and asked, "Who is your chief and leader?"We all pointed to Mundhir bin Aidh. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Is this Ashajj?" That was the first day this name was given to him, owing to a blow to his face from a donkey's hoof.We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He stayed behind after the others, hobbled their mounts, gathered their belongings, then took out his travel bag, removed his travel clothes, put on his finest garments, and came forward to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ had stretched out his leg and was reclining. When Ashajj approached, the people made space for him and said, "Over here, Ashajj."The Prophet ﷺ sat up straight, drew in his leg, and said, "Here, Ashajj." So he sat at the right side of the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet welcomed him warmly, was gentle with him, and asked him about his homeland, naming village after village, Safa, Mushaqqar, and other villages of Hajar.Ashajj said, "May my father and mother be ransom for you, Messenger of Allah, you know the names of our villages better than we do."He replied, "I have walked through your lands, and they were spread out for me."Then he turned to the Ansar and said, "Company of Ansar, honor your brothers, for they resemble you in Islam, most like you in their hair and complexion. They embraced Islam willingly, neither under compulsion nor out of vengeance, when other peoples refused Islam until they were killed."The next morning he asked, "How did you find your brothers' hospitality and treatment of you?"They said, "The best of brothers. They softened our beds, gave us excellent food, and spent the night and morning teaching us the Book of our Lord and the Sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ."This pleased the Prophet ﷺ and made him glad. Then he turned to us one by one, and each of us presented to him what we had learned, and he taught us. Among us were those who learned the Tahiyyat, the Opening of the Book, a surah or two, and the Sunan. Then he turned his face toward us and asked, "Do you have any of your provisions with you?"The people were delighted by this and rushed to their saddles. Each man came with a bundle of dates, and they placed them on a leather mat before him. He pointed with a palm-frond stick in his hand, which he used as a pointer, longer than a forearm but shorter than two, and asked, "Do you call this Tadud?"We said, "Yes."Then he pointed to another bundle and asked, "Do you call this Sirfan?"We said, "Yes."Then he pointed to another bundle and asked, "Do you call this Barni?"We said, "Yes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed it is the best of your dates and the most beneficial for you."So when we returned from that delegation, we planted much of it, and our desire for it grew until most of our palms and dates became Barni.Ashajj said, "Messenger of Allah, our land is heavy and unhealthy, and if we do not drink these beverages, our complexions become sickly and our bellies swell."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not drink from gourds, green-glazed jars, or hollowed stumps. Let one of you drink from a waterskin tied at its mouth."Ashajj said to him, "May my father and mother be ransom for you, Messenger of Allah, permit us something like this," gesturing with his palms. He said, "Ashajj, were I to permit you something like this," and he gestured with his hands likewise, "you would drink it from something like this," and he spread his hands wider, meaning something larger, "until when one of you became drunk from his drink, he would rise to his cousin and slash his shin with a sword."In the delegation was a man from Banu Adal called Harith whose shin had been slashed during one of their drinking sessions in a house, because he had recited verses about a woman of theirs, and one of the household had risen and slashed his shin with a sword.Harith said, "When I heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I began to let my garment hang down to cover the wound on my shin, but Allah
had already exposed it."
