He was among those who built the Kaabah in the days of ignorance. He said, "I had a stone of my own that I had carved with my own hand, which I worshipped instead of Allah . I would bring thick curdled milk that I would have preferred to consume myself, and pour it over the stone. Then a dog would come and lick it up, then lift its leg and urinate on it.We kept building until we reached the place of the Black Stone, and no one could find it. Suddenly there it was, in the midst of our stones, like a man's head, almost as if a man's face could be seen in it.One clan of Quraysh said, "We will set it in place."Others said, "No, we will set it in place."So they said, "Appoint someone to judge between you."They said, "The first man to come up through the pass."Then the Prophet ﷺ came, and they said, "The trustworthy one has come to you."They told him about the matter, and he placed the stone in a cloth, then called for all the clans, and they each took hold of a side of the cloth along with him, and he himself ﷺ set it in place.
حدثنا عبد الصمد حدثنا ثابت يعني أبا زيد حدثنا هلال يعني ابن خباب
أنه كان فيمن يبني الكعبة في الجاهلية قال ولي حجر أنا نحته بيدي أعبده من دون الله تبارك وتعالى فأجيء باللبن الخاثر الذي أنفسه على نفسي فأصبه عليه فيجيء الكلب فيلحسه ثم يشغر فيبول فبنينا حتى بلغنا موضع الحجر وما يرى الحجر أحد فإذا هو وسط حجارتنا مثل رأس الرجل يكاد يتراءى منه وجه الرجل فقال بطن من قريش نحن نضعه وقال آخرون نحن نضعه فقالوا اجعلوا بينكم حكما قالوا أول رجل يطلع من الفج فجاء النبي ﷺ فقالوا أتاكم الأمين فقالوا له فوضعه في ثوب ثم دعا بطونهم فأخذوا بنواحيه معه فوضعه هو ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Mujahid narrates from his patron Abu Saaib bin Abu Saaib. The hadith was also related by Hakim, 1/458, who graded it sahih, and Dhahabi agreed with him. It was also related in similar wording by Tabarani in Al-Kabir, 6/129, no. 6617, and by Darimi as well, 1/24, no. 3, in the introduction, concerning what people were like before the mission of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
