I fell seriously ill in Mecca during the year of the conquest, so ill that I was on the brink of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me. I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?"(Sufyan once said the wording was, "Shall I give all my wealth in charity?")He said, "No."I said, "Then two-thirds?"He said, "No."I said, "Then half?"He said, "No."I said, "Then a third?"He said, "A third, and even a third is a lot. It is better to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them destitute, begging from people. Whatever you spend will be rewarded, even the morsel of food you lift to your wife's mouth."I said, "Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions have migrated?"He said, "You will not be left behind to perform any deed seeking the face of Allah without being raised in rank and degree because of it. Perhaps you will be left behind so that some people may benefit from you and others may be harmed by you. Allah, complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels. But the unfortunate one is Saad bin Khawla." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved for him because he had died in Mecca.
حدثنا سفيان عن الزهري
