During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, owners of farmland used to lease their fields in exchange for whatever crops grew along the irrigation channels and whatever was watered directly by the streams around the plants. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and brought a dispute concerning some of these arrangements, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from leasing on such terms and said, "Lease them for gold and silver."
حدثنا يعقوب قال سمعت أبي يحدث عن محمد بن عكرمة عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن ابن لبيبة عن سعيد بن المسيب
أن أصحاب المزارع في زمان رسول الله ﷺ كانوا يكرون مزارعهم بما يكون على السواقي من الزروع وما سعد بالماء مما حول النبت فجاءوا رسول الله ﷺ فاختصموا في بعض ذلك فنهاهم رسول الله ﷺ أن يكروا بذلك وقال أكروا بالذهب والفضة
