Muhammad ﷺ was the dearest man to me among all people during the days of ignorance. When he declared his prophethood and migrated to Madinah, Hakeem bin Hizam attended the pilgrimage season while still a disbeliever. He found a fine garment that had belonged to Dhu Yazan being offered for sale, so he bought it for fifty Dinar intending to present it as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He brought it to him in Madinah and tried to have him accept it as a gift, but he refused.Ubaydullah said, "I think he said, 'We do not accept anything from the polytheists, but if you wish, we can take it for its price.'"So when he refused to accept it as a gift, I sold it to him.

كان محمد ﷺ أحب رجل في الناس إلي في الجاهلية فلما تنبأ وخرج إلى المدينة شهد حكيم بن حزام الموسم وهو كافر فوجد حلة لذي يزن تباع فاشتراها بخمسين دينارا ليهديها لرسول الله ﷺ فقدم بها عليه المدينة فأراده على قبضها هدية فأبى قال عبيد الله حسبت أنه قال إنا لا نقبل شيئا من المشركين ولكن إن شئت أخذناها بالثمن فأعطيته حين أبى علي الهدية
