I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for wealth and pressed him persistently. He said, "Hakeem, how frequent are your requests, Hakeem! This wealth is sweet and green, but along with that it is the filth from people's hands. The hand of Allah is above the hand of the giver, and the hand of the giver is above the hand of the receiver, and the lowest of hands is the hand of the receiver."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا ابن أبي ذئب عن مسلم بن جندب
سألت رسول الله ﷺ من المال فألحفت فقال يا حكيم ما أكثر مسألتك يا حكيم إن هذا المال خضرة حلوة وإنما هو مع ذلك أوساخ أيدي الناس ويد الله فوق يد المعطي ويد المعطي فوق يد المعطى وأسفل الأيدي يد المعطى
Its chain of transmission is sahih, and Muslim bin Jundab Huzali the reciter is trustworthy according to everyone. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari with similar wording from Hakeem in 11/258, number 6441, Fath al-Bari, in the chapter on Riqaq, the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "This wealth is green and sweet." Muslim narrated it in 2/717, number 1035, in the chapter on zakat, the upper hand, with similar wording. Tirmidhi narrated it in 4/641, number 2463, and graded it sahih. Nasai narrated it in 5/100, in the chapter on zakat, the case of a man asking for something he cannot do without. Darimi narrated it in 2/310, Abdul-Razzaq in number 16407, Tabarani in al-Kabir 3/211, and Hakim in 2/3, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
