I went in to see Saad and mentioned a hadith that someone had reported from him about when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed Ali as his deputy over Medina. He became angry and asked, "Who told you this?"I did not want to tell him that it was his own son who had narrated it to me, fearing he would be angry with him. Then he said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on the expedition of Tabuk, he appointed Ali as his deputy over Medina. Ali said, 'Messenger of Allah, I would not want you to set out on any journey unless I were with you.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Are you not pleased to be in relation to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?'"
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Saad, from whom Ibn Musayab heard, is Amir bin Saad, as was made clear in the narration of Muslim to which we referred at 1490. See also 1509. In [manuscript] h: "haddathana" instead of "haddathani". As for Ibn Musayab's statement, "haddathani ibnun li-Saad bin Malik haddathana from his father," this is how it appears in the three source manuscripts, and its meaning would be that a son of Saad bin Abu Waqqas told him from his father, so he mentioned it that way. But it appears to me that the original wording was "haddathani ibnun li-Saad bin Malik hadithan from his father," and the copyists thought that the word "hadithan" was "haddathana," so they abbreviated it according to their usual practice of abbreviation, and it was written in the sources as "thana." The meaning is the same either way, but what we have supposed seems closer and clearer, though we did not permit ourselves to alter what is in the sources without solid proof and certainty.Likewise his statement, "hadithan haddathtanihi anka," it appears to me that its correct form is "haddathtahu anka." "Dakhalat" in [manuscript] h is "dakhalat." We have retained what is in [manuscripts] k and h.
