The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about exchanging fresh dates for dried dates. He said, "Do fresh dates not decrease in weight when they dry?"They replied, "Yes."So he disapproved of it.
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abdullah bin Yazid Makhzumi, freedman of Aswad bin Abu Sufyan, is trustworthy and authoritative, one of the teachers of Malik. Abu Ayyash is Zayd bin Ayyash, who is trustworthy. Daraqutni deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzayma, and Ibn Hibban graded this hadith of his sahih. The hadith appears in Muwatta 2:128, and Shafii related it from Malik in his Risalah, with our commentary, 907, and in Ikhtilaf al-Hadith p. 319, and in al-Umm 3:15. The compilers of the four Sunan works also related it. Tirmidhi said, 2:232-233, this is a hasan sahih hadith.Hakim related it in al-Mustadrak 2:38-39, and said, this is a sahih hadith, because the leading scholars of transmission agree on the authority of Malik bin Anas and that he is precise in everything he transmits of hadith, since nothing has been found in his transmission except what is sahih, especially in hadiths of the people of Madinah. Furthermore, these leading scholars followed him in his transmission from Abdullah bin Yazid. The two sheikhs, Bukhari and Muslim, did not include it because of what they feared regarding the obscurity of Zayd Abu Ayyash.Ibn Hazm clung to the obscurity of Zayd and therefore judged the hadith daif, and I responded to him in my commentary on al-Ihkam 7:153, and he likewise claimed the same in al-Muhalla 8:262. Khattabi said in Maalim Sunan 3:78, some people have found fault with the chain of the hadith of Saad bin Abu Waqqas, saying that Zayd Abu Ayyash, its narrator, is daif, and that such a hadith, on Shafii's own principle, cannot be relied upon as evidence. The sheikh, meaning Khattabi, said, but the matter is not as they imagined. This Abu Ayyash is a freedman of Banu Zahra, well known, and Malik mentioned him in the Muwatta. Malik does not transmit from a man whose hadith is to be abandoned, under any circumstance, and this is a known matter of Malik's practice and habit.
