Marhab the Jew came out from their fortress, fully armed, chanting boastfully,"Khaybar knows well that I am Marhab, A fully armed warrior, a tested champion, At times I thrust, at other times I strike, When lions come forward burning with rage, My territory is a sanctuary none dares approach."He was calling out, "Who will duel me?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Who will face this man?"Muhammad bin Maslama said, "I will face him, Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I am the wronged one seeking vengeance. They killed my brother yesterday."The Prophet said, "Then rise against him. O Allah, help him against him."When the two drew near each other, an old acacia tree of the ushar variety stood between them. Each one began taking cover behind it from the other, and whenever one took shelter behind it, the other would cut away with his sword whatever stood between them, until each had a clear view of his opponent. The tree between them became like an upright man with no branches left.Then Marhab charged at Muhammad and struck at him. Muhammad shielded himself with his buckler, and Marhab's sword landed in it and got caught fast, held firm by the buckler. Muhammad bin Maslama then struck him until he killed him.
حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال فحدثني عبد الله بن سهل بن عبد الرحمن بن سهل أخو بني حارثة
خرج مرحب اليهودي من حصنهم قد جمع سلاحه يرتجز ويقول قد علمت خيبر أني مرحب شاكي السلاح بطل مجرب أطعن أحيانا وحينا أضرب إذا الليوث أقبلت تلهب كان حماي لحمى لا يقرب وهو يقول من مبارز فقال رسول الله ﷺ من لهذا فقال محمد ابن مسلمة أنا له يا رسول الله وأنا والله الموتور الثائر قتلوا أخي بالأمس قال فقم إليه اللهم أعنه عليه فلما دنا أحدهما من صاحبه دخلت بينهما شجرة عمرية من شجر العشر فجعل أحدهما يلوذ بها من صاحبه كلما لاذ بها منه اقتطع بسيفه ما دونه حتى برز كل واحد منهما لصاحبه وصارت بينهما كالرجل القائم ما فيها فنن ثم حمل مرحب على محمد فضربه فاتقى بالدرقة فوقع سيفه فيها فعضت به فأمسكته وضربه محمد بن مسلمة حتى قتله
