Saad bin Abu Waqqas reported,

Sufyan reported from Amir bin Saad, and Masaar reported from someone among the family of Saad, from Saad, that the Prophet ﷺ came to visit him while he was ill in Mecca.Saad said, "Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all of my wealth?"He replied, "No."Saad asked, "Then half?"He replied, "No."Saad asked, "Then a third?"He said, "A third, and a third is much," or "a great deal. It is better that you leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them poor, begging from people. Whatever you spend on your family as maintenance, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife's mouth."The narrator said, at that time Saad had only one daughter. Then Saad mentioned the matter of his emigration, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra. Perhaps Allah will raise you up so that some people will benefit through you and others will be harmed through you."
