The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I saw in a dream that I was wearing a strong coat of mail, and I saw cattle being slaughtered. I interpreted the strong coat of mail as Madinah, and the cattle, by Allah, as something good."He then said to his companions, "If we were to remain in Madinah, and they enter upon us here, we would fight them."They said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, they never entered upon us here during the days of ignorance, so how could they enter upon us here in Islam?"Affan said in his version of the hadith, the Prophet then said, "Do as you wish then." So he put on his armor.The Ansar said, "We have caused the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to go against his own view." So they came and said, "Prophet of Allah, do as you wish."He replied, "It is not fitting for a prophet, once he has put on his armor, to take it off until he has fought."
حدثنا عبد الصمد وعفان قالا حدثنا حماد قال عفان في حديثه أخبرنا أبو الزبير وقال عبد الصمد في حديثه حدثنا أبو الزبير
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال رأيت كأني في درع حصينة ورأيت بقرا منحرة فأولت أن الدرع الحصينة المدينة وأن البقر هو والله خير قال فقال لأصحابه لو أنا أقمنا بالمدينة فإن دخلوا علينا فيها قاتلناهم فقالوا يا رسول الله والله ما دخل علينا فيها في الجاهلية فكيف يدخل علينا فيها في الإسلام قال عفان في حديثه فقال شأنكم إذا قال فلبس لأمته قال فقالت الأنصار رددنا على رسول الله ﷺ رأيه فجاءوا فقالوا يا نبي الله شأنك إذا فقال إنه ليس لنبي إذا لبس لأمته أن يضعها حتى يقاتل
