The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand. I set out, completed it, and returned. When I came to the Prophet ﷺ and greeted him with peace, he did not return my greeting.Something stirred in my heart that only Allah knows. I thought to myself, "Perhaps the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is displeased with me for being slow."I greeted him again, and again he did not respond, and what stirred in my heart this time was even worse than before. Then I greeted him a third time, and he returned my greeting and said, "Nothing prevented me from returning your greeting except that I was praying."He was on his mount, facing a direction other than the qiblah.
حدثنا عبد الصمد حدثني أبي حدثنا كثير بن شنظير حدثنا عطاء بن أبي رباح
أرسلني رسول الله ﷺ في حاجة فانطلقت ثم رجعت وقد قضيتها فأتيت النبي ﷺ فسلمت عليه فلم يرد علي قال فوقع في نفسي ما الله به أعلم قال قلت لعل رسول الله ﷺ وجد علي أن أبطأت فسلمت عليه فلم يرد علي فوقع في نفسي ما الله أعلم أشد من الأولى ثم سلمت فرد علي وقال أما إنه لم يمنعني أن أرد عليك إلا أني كنت أصلي فكان على راحلته متوجها لغير القبلة
