Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him for an increase in their living expenses, but he had nothing to give them, until they pressed him so hard that he withdrew from them.Abu Bakr came and asked permission to enter, but was not granted permission. Then Umar came and asked permission to enter, and he too was not granted permission. After that, both of them asked permission again, and this time they were admitted, and they found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sitting among his wives.Umar said to him, "Messenger of Allah, the daughter of Zayd asked me for extra provisions, so I struck her on the neck," or something to that effect, intending to make the Prophet ﷺ laugh. The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his back teeth showed, and said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, nothing has kept me from them except the very thing you mention."Then Abu Bakr and Umar went over to their daughters, took them by the hand, and said, "Do you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not possess?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from doing so, and they replied, "We will not do it again." It was at that moment that the verse giving him the choice was revealed.

حدثنا حسن حدثنا ابن لهيعة حدثنا أبو الزبير سمع

جابر بن عبد الله أنه قال

إن أزواج رسول الله ﷺ سألنه النفقة فلم يوافق عنده شيء حتى أحجزنه فأتاه أبو بكر فاستأذن عليه فلم يؤذن له ثم أتاه عمر فاستأذن عليه فلم يؤذن له ثم استأذنا بعد ذلك فأذن لهما ووجداه بينهن فقال له عمر يا رسول الله إن ابنة زيد سألتني النفقة فوجأتها أو نحو ذلك وأراد بذلك أن يضحكه فضحك حتى بدت نواجذه وقال والذي نفسي بيده ما حبسني غير ذلك فقاما إلى ابنتيهما فأخذا بأيديهما فقالا أتسألان رسول الله ﷺ ما ليس عنده فنهاهما رسول الله ﷺ عنهما فقالا لا نعد فعند ذلك نزل التخيير
