Abu Zubayr reported,

I asked Jabir, "Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about a man taking many steps to the mosque?"He replied, "We had intended to move from our homes closer into Madinah to be near the mosque, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from doing so and said, 'Do not leave Madinah bare. You have a merit over those who live next to the mosque, for every step you take is a degree.'"

سألت جابرا أسمع رسول الله ﷺ يقول في كثرة خطا الرجل إلى المسجد شيئا فقال هممنا أن ننتقل من دورنا إلى المدينة لقرب المسجد فزجرنا رسول الله ﷺ عن ذلك وقال لا تعروا المدينة فإن لكم فضيلة على من عند المسجد بكل خطوة درجة
