He came in upon Jabir bin Abdullah while he was praying in a single garment, with other clothes around him. When he finished his prayer, he said, "I asked, 'May Allah forgive you, Abu Abdullah. You pray in a single garment when these clothes of yours are right beside you?'"Jabir replied, "I wanted a fool like you to come in upon me and see me praying in a single garment. Did every one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have two garments?"He said, Jabir then began to narrate to us, saying, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the garment is wide enough, wrap it across your shoulders and then pray. When it is too narrow for that, tie it around your waist and then pray without an upper garment."

أنه دخل على جابر بن عبد الله وهو يصلي في ثوب واحد وحوله ثياب فلما فرغ من صلاته قال قلت غفر الله لك يا أبا عبد الله تصلي في ثوب واحد وهذه ثيابك إلى جنبك قال أردت أن يدخل علي الأحمق مثلك فيراني أصلي في ثوب واحد أوكان لكل أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ ثوبان قال ثم أنشأ جابر يحدثنا فقال قال رسول الله ﷺ إذا ما اتسع الثوب فتعاطف به على منكبيك ثم صل وإذا ضاق عن ذاك فشد به حقويك ثم صل من غير رداء له
