Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

We, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, entered the state of ihram intending Hajj alone, with nothing else combined with it, just Hajj by itself. We arrived in Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Exit ihram and make it an Umrah."Word reached him that we were saying, "When there are only five days between us and Arafah, he is ordering us to exit ihram. Then some of us will go off to Mina with semen dripping from our private parts."So he addressed us and said, "Word has reached me of what you said. I am the most God-fearing among you and the most righteous. Were it not for the sacrificial animal I brought, I would have exited ihram myself. Had I known earlier what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. Exit ihram and make it an Umrah."Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, then arrived from Yemen. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What did you enter ihram for?"Ali replied, "For the same as what the Prophet ﷺ entered ihram for."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then offer your sacrificial animal and remain in ihram as you are."
