He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition of three hundred men and placed Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrah in command over them. Our provisions ran out, so Abu Ubayda gathered their remaining supplies and placed them in a leather bag, then began rationing them out to us until our share came down to a single date per day.A man said to him, "Abu Abdullah, what good could a single date do for you?"He replied, "We truly felt its loss when it ran out. We continued on until we reached the seashore, where we came upon a fish as massive as a great hill. The army ate from it for eighteen nights. Then Abu Ubayda took two of its ribs and set them up upright, then ordered his mount to be brought, and it was saddled and passed beneath them without touching them."
حدثنا عبد الرحمن عن مالك عن وهب بن كيسان
أخبره أن رسول الله ﷺ بعث سرية ثلاث مائة وأمر عليهم أبا عبيدة بن الجراح فنفد زادنا فجمع أبو عبيدة زادهم فجعله في مزود فكان يقيتنا حتى كان يصيبنا كل يوم تمرة فقال له رجل يا أبا عبد الله وما كانت تغني عنكم تمرة قال قد وجدنا فقدها حين ذهبت حتى انتهينا إلى الساحل فإذا حوت مثل الظرب العظيم قال فأكل منه ذلك الجيش ثمان عشرة ليلة ثم أخذ أبو عبيدة ضلعين من أضلاعه فنصبهما ثم أمر براحلته فرحلت فمرت تحتهما فلم يصبها شيء
