The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever has land should cultivate it. If he is unable to do so or finds it too difficult, let him grant its use to his brother and not rent it out."
حدثنا يحيى عن عبد الملك حدثنا عطاء
قال رسول الله ﷺ من كانت له أرض فليزرعها فإن لم يستطع أو عجز عنها فليمنحها أخاه ولا يؤاجرها
Its isnad is sahih, and it is found in all the major collections. It has already appeared at 3125. There is disagreement among the narrators concerning the dislike or permissibility of leasing land. The view held by the researchers among the jurists and hadith scholars is that it is permissible, whether for dinars and dirhams or for a share of what the land produces, by analogy with what ﷺ did with the Jews in Khaybar. This prohibition is meant only as guidance and encouragement toward cooperation, since the fundamental principles of the sharia do not require a Muslim to volunteer something from the outset except in matters that are obligatory.
