Mujabbir reported,

Uthman looked down upon those who were besieging him and greeted them with peace, but they did not return his greeting.Uthman said, "Is Talha among the people?"Talha replied, "Yes."Uthman said, "Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. I greet a people among whom you are present, and you do not return my greeting?"Talha said, "I did return it."Uthman said, "That is not how a greeting is returned. I heard you, but you did not let me hear you. Talha, I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Prophet ﷺ say that the blood of a Muslim is not lawful except in one of three cases, that he disbelieves after his faith, or commits adultery after marriage, or kills a soul and is killed in retaliation for it?"Talha said, "By Allah, yes."Uthman then said the takbir and declared, "By Allah, I have never denied Allah since I came to know Him, nor have I committed adultery in the days of ignorance or in Islam. I refrained from it in the days of ignorance out of dignity and in Islam out of chastity. Nor have I killed any soul for which my own killing would be lawful."

حدثني محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن مجبر عن أبيه عن جده

أن عثمان رضي الله عنه أشرف على الذين حصروه فسلم عليهم فلم يردوا عليه فقال عثمان رضي الله عنه أفي القوم طلحة قال طلحة نعم قال فإنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون أسلم على قوم أنت فيهم فلا تردون قال قد رددت قال ما هكذا الرد أسمعك ولا تسمعني يا طلحة أنشدك الله أسمعت النبي ﷺ يقول لا يحل دم المسلم إلا واحدة من ثلاث أن يكفر بعد إيمانه أو يزني بعد إحصانه أو يقتل نفسا فيقتل بها قال اللهم نعم فكبر عثمان فقال والله ما أنكرت الله منذ عرفته ولا زنيت في جاهلية ولا إسلام وقد تركته في الجاهلية تكرها وفي الإسلام تعففا وما قتلت نفسا يحل بها قتلي
