The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep, then pray without performing ablution again.
حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا شعبة حدثنا قتادة قال سمعت
كان أصحاب النبي ﷺ ينامون ثم يصلون ولا يتوضئون
Its isnad is sahih. What is meant is not sleeping in bed, but rather sleeping while waiting for the Isha prayer, as in hadith 12816 and its cross-references. Muslim narrated it, 1/284, no. 125, in the Book of Purification, as evidence that the sleep of one sitting does not invalidate wudu. Bukhari narrated something similar, 1/288, no. 184 (Fath), as did Abu Dawud, 1/138, no. 200, and Tirmidhi, 1/313, no. 212.
