There was an exchange of words between Khalid bin Walid and Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and Khalid said to Abdul-Rahman, "You consider yourselves superior to us because of a few days by which you preceded us in Islam."We were told that this was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said, "Leave my companions alone. By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you were to spend the equivalent of Uhud, or the equivalent of the mountains, in gold, you would not reach the level of their deeds."

كان بين خالد بن الوليد وبين عبد الرحمن بن عوف كلام فقال خالد لعبد الرحمن تستطيلون علينا بأيام سبقتمونا بها فبلغنا أن ذلك ذكر للنبي ﷺ فقال دعوا لي أصحابي فوالذي نفسي بيده لو أنفقتم مثل أحد أو مثل الجبال ذهبا ما بلغتم أعمالهم

Its chain of transmission is sahih, and Haythami likewise graded it sahih with this wording in 10/15. Bukhari mentioned it with similar wording in 5/10, in the chapters on the virtues of the companions, as did Muslim in 4/1967, number 2540, in the chapters on the virtues of the companions, on the prohibition of reviling the companions, and Abu Dawud in 5/45, number 4658, in the Book of Sunnah, on the prohibition against reviling the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Tirmidhi in the Book of Virtues, 5/653, chapter 59, where he said, hasan sahih.
