Anas bin Malik reported,

While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his companions, a Jew passed by and offered a greeting. After he had gone, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him over and asked, "What did you say?"The man replied, "I said, 'Death be upon you.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "When one of the People of the Book greets you, respond by saying, 'And upon you,' meaning whatever you have said."

حدثنا سويد بن عمرو الكلبي حدثنا أبان عن قتادة

عن أنس بن مالك قال

بينما رسول الله ﷺ قاعدا في أصحابه إذ مر بهم يهودي فسلم فلما مضى دعاه فقال كيف قلت قال قلت سام عليكم فقال رسول الله ﷺ إذا سلم عليكم أحد من أهل الكتاب فقولوا عليكم أي ما قلتم
