He saw Ali approach a young boy and buy a shirt from him for three dirhams. Ali put it on, and it reached between his wrists and his ankles. As he was wearing it, he said, "Praise be to Allah, who has provided me with clothing by which I may adorn myself among people and cover my nakedness."Someone said to him, "Is this something you are reporting from yourself, or from the Prophet of Allah ﷺ?"Ali replied, "This is something I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say when putting on a new garment, 'Praise be to Allah, who has provided me with clothing by which I may adorn myself among people and cover my nakedness.'"

أنه رأى عليا أتى غلاما حدثا فاشترى منه قميصا بثلاثة دراهم ولبسه إلى ما بين الرسغين إلى الكعبين يقول ولبسه الحمد لله الذي رزقني من الرياش ما أتجمل به في الناس وأواري به عورتي فقيل هذا شيء ترويه عن نفسك أو عن نبي الله ﷺ قال هذا شيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ يقوله عند الكسوة الحمد لله الذي رزقني من الرياش ما أتجمل به في الناس وأواري به عورتي
Its isnad is daif. Mukhtar bin Nafi al-Tammar is daif. Bukhari discussed him in al-Kabir 4/1/386 and did not fault him, but in al-Saghir 173 he said, "He is munkar al-hadith," and he said likewise in al-Duafa 34. Abu Zura said, "His hadith is unsound." As for Abu Matar al-Juhani al-Basri, it is stated in al-Tajil 520, "Abu Hatim said, He is unknown. Hafs bin Ghiyath abandoned him." Abu Zura said, "His name is not known." Bukhari discussed him in al-Kuna number 714, saying, "He heard from Ali, and Mukhtar bin Nafi narrated from him." The hadith appears in al-Zawaid 5:118–119, where it is also attributed to Abu Yaala, and it is graded daif because of Mukhtar bin Nafi. The hadith, in fuller form, is number 1352.
