The muezzin, or perhaps Bilal, would call the iqamah, then the Prophet ﷺ would enter and a man would approach him with some need. He would stand with him attending to it until most of the people had begun to nod off.
حدثنا حسن بن موسى حدثنا عمارة يعني ابن زاذان حدثنا ثابت
أن المؤذن أو بلالا كان يقيم فيدخل النبي ﷺ فيستقبله الرجل في الحاجة فيقوم معه حتى تخفق عامتهم رءوسهم
