Ali was in Yemen when the people there dug a pit to trap a lion. The lion came and fell into it. A man fell in as well, and as he fell he clung to another, and that one clung to another, and that one to yet another, until four men were caught together in the pit. The lion mauled them. Some died inside the pit, and some were pulled out and died afterward. The relatives of the dead disputed over the matter until they took up arms against one another. Then Ali
came to them and said, "Woe to you. Will you kill two hundred men over the affair of four? Come, let me judge between you. If you accept my judgment, well and good. Otherwise, take the matter to the Prophet ﷺ."He ruled that the first man receive a quarter of the full blood-money, the second a third, the third a half, and the fourth the full blood-money. He placed the responsibility for paying the blood-money upon the tribes of those who had crowded around the pit. Some accepted the ruling and others rejected it, so they took the matter to the Prophet ﷺ.Bahz said, Hammad said, "I believe he said that the Prophet ﷺ was reclining, then he sat up and clasped his knees and said, 'I shall judge between you.'"He was then informed that Ali
had already ruled in such and such a manner, so the Prophet ﷺ confirmed his judgment.Affan said, "I shall judge between you."
