A Jewish man passed by the Prophet ﷺ and his companions and said, "As-samu alaykum" (death be upon you). The Prophet's companions returned the greeting, but the Prophet ﷺ said, "He only said, 'Death be upon you.'"The Jewish man was seized and brought forward, and he confessed.The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Return to them what they said."
حدثنا بهز وعفان قالا حدثنا همام أخبرنا قتادة
أن يهوديا مر على النبي ﷺ وأصحابه فقال السام عليكم فرد عليه أصحاب النبي ﷺ فقال النبي ﷺ إنما قال السام عليكم فأخذ اليهودي فجيء به فاعترف فقال النبي ﷺ ردوا عليهم ما قالوا
