The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed something, so I said, "Messenger of Allah, others are more deserving of this than these people, namely the people of Suffah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "You leave me no choice but to either ask me rudely or to make me appear stingy, and I am not stingy."
Its isnad is sahih. Shaqiq is Abu Waail Shaqiq bin Salama. Salman bin Rabia is Salman of the Horses, so called because he was in charge of the horses in the time of Umar. He was one of the senior Tabiin, and it is said that he was a companion. Muslim narrated the hadith in 1:287 through the route of Jareer from Amash. In [manuscript] ح it reads, "You give me the choice that you ask me with obscenity," which is a clear error. We corrected it based on [manuscripts] ك and هـ. In the margin of ك there is a variant reading, "They give me the choice between asking me with obscenity and calling me stingy."
