The people of Mecca asked the Prophet ﷺ for a sign, so the moon split into two halves at Mecca. Then the verse was revealed, "The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split. Yet if they see a sign, they turn away and say, 'Continuous magic.'" [Qamar 54:1–2]
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن قتادة
سأل أهل مكة النبي ﷺ آية فانشق القمر بمكة مرتين فقال {اقتربت الساعة وانشق القمر وإن يروا آية يعرضوا ويقولوا سحر مستمر}
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is found in Bukhari 4/253, Book of the Signs of Prophethood, on the polytheists asking the Prophet ﷺ to show them a sign, and in Muslim 4/2158, no. 2800, in the Characteristics of the Hypocrites, on the splitting of the moon, and in Tirmidhi 2182, and Tayalisi 2448 Minhah, and Bayhaqi in Dalail 1/95, and Tabarani in Kabir 10/94, and Humaydi no. 85.
